Well, at a guess I would say it’s because they are on the bottom wrung of a viciously racist society where 54% of the dominant race have a negative view of them, and where they are forced to go to schools in grim slums, where demoralised teachers are too busy jigging their stats to conform to idiotic ‘no child left behind’ laws to actually teach. Black delinquent children are massively more likely to be expelled from school and have a criminal record than white delinquent children.
Then of course they have the streets, which are ruled by gangs such that joining a gang is an imperative if you want to live past your 18th birthday. So no job, no prospects, people turn to drug crime to earn a living, which by definition is violent. Millions of African Americans are then incarcerated meaning they lose any chance of ever having a career or even a say in how society is managed.
Then we have the well-known correlation between poverty and violent crime, every 1% increase in poverty leads to a 2.57% increase in violent crime (Taylor, 2006). Work out how many percent African American males are poorer than white males and we have significant factor right there.
Then we have mental illness, poverty leads to increased levels of mental illness, which in turn leads to higher crime rates. 56.2% of all American inmates are mentally ill as of 2006, a rise of 400% over the previous ten years. American prisons are now the leading institutions combating mental illness in the USA. A situation they are neither trained, equipped, prepared or funded for.
Then there is the correlation between lead and violent crime. Lead in the atmosphere causes irreparable damage to children’s brains, leading to reduced I.Q., increased levels of conditions such as Dyslexia, and violent behaviour. Children in urban environments are exposed to much higher levels of lead toxicity due to their closer proximity to cars, lead paint and heavy industry. Nevin (2007) has demonstrated that there is a 23 year gap between efforts to reduce lead levels in gasoline and a fall in violent crime rates.

Murder and crime rates are given as number of cases per 100,000 population. That’s what the word “rate” means. So the higher murder rate in the USA is nothing to do with population, it’s to do with the fact that an American citizen is four times more likely to be murdered than citizens in the UK because the rate per 100,000 population is four times higher.

Managed to log on to my next-door neighbours WiFi, which means I was able to view this video just now for the first time. Trying to ignore the guy’s irritating whiney/needy voice and concentrate on what he was actually saying proved to be quite difficult, but when I did the guy proved to be a laugh a minute.
He starts off saying he doesn’t trust people’s choice of data sources or use of that data when trying to make a political point, but then goes on to randomly cherry-pik two dates (without any explanation) to prove a political point!

He goes on to say that nobody is taking credit for this 50% drop in violent crimes, a simple Google search on the subject reveals 48.9 million results (!) with page after page of analysis of why this is happening and who should take credit!
Then he unearths the old canard about England Wales’s violent crime rates being higher than America’s. It isn’t. The definitions of what constitute violent crime in England and the USA are totally different. (I listed some of the more obvious differences upthread.)
Now despite his gerrymandering he is still left with a problem, the murder rate in the USA (lots of guns) is four times higher than in the UK (gun possession illegal.) So how does he parley that? Well, that’s difficult to say because his argument is confused and incoherent.
He starts off by telling us that murder rates are higher in urban areas greater than 250,000 people. Now America, he says, has many times more urban areas than the UK (quite why this would affect the murder RATE – rather than the volume of murders he fails to explain) and therefor that’s why America’s murder rate is higher! Apparently because murder is more common in American urban areas it must be same in the UK too (though he provides no evidence to back this assertion up).
But it gets worse, he tells us that jobs and education are the keys to lowering the murder rate in urban areas. No argument from me there, I have already shown upthread how every 1% increase in poverty leads to a 2.7% increase in violent crime. However does this explain the different murder rates in the two countries? After all, it was his assertion that the greater number of urban areas in the USA was the cause of America’s higher murder rate. Well…. No. In both countries inequality has risen sharply since the days of Reaganomics and Thatcherism, and overall level of poverty is close to the same at 24% of the USA population living in poverty and 22% in the UK (using the E.U. definition of poverty as people earning 60% or less of national mean income.) So different levels of poverty or people living in urban areas cannot explain the massive difference in murder rates. There can only be one other conclusion, the one he doesn’t want us to believe, that guns translate similar violent crime rates into massively higher murder rates.
Now if what Brandon says is really true, that this laughable little video is “One of the Most Important Anti-Gun Control Videos You’ll Ever See”, then your arguments are truly fucked.
