Last night’s State of the Union really ticked me off and if you follow me on Twitter, you probably saw my rant this morning. I can’t stand whining. I can’t stand people thinking they’re entitled to everything under the sun. I’m sick and tired of people thinking socialism and communism work. Margaret Thatcher said, “…and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They [socialists] always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them.”
My absolute favorite quote is from my favorite president Calvin Coolidge: “There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means.” Take it a step further and try living below your means.
Let’s start with education. It’s not a right. DEAL with it. Please explain to me why I have to pay for your college education when my husband and I can’t afford to send our girls to college? Unless they’re National Merit Scholars we’ll have to take out loans. So if we have to take out loans for them why pay for yours? I’d rather pay for my girls than you. I know that makes me a terrible person. I don’t care. Also, don’t choose an expensive school! I chose Oklahoma State over my dream colleges because my parents lived in Stillwater. I was able to live at home and pay tuition out of pocket. I had a part time job to pay for fees and books. I left school debt free. To me that was worth it. Plus I met my soul mate.
Get the loans. Get grants. Work your ass off in high school so you can get scholarships. Apply for every scholarship you can. Don’t go to an expensive school. Here’s a hint: If your job requires a degree they just care you have that piece of paper.
Next subject: HOUSES! You are NOT entitled to a house. If you can’t afford it DON’T BUY ONE. If you can afford it DON’T BUY ABOVE YOUR MEANS! Instead buy one a little below your means. That way you know you can afford it & pay it off sooner. Why should I pay for you to have a house? I don’t owe you anything. There is a reason why buying a house requires a ton of hours reading paperwork! You don’t want to miss a single detail! Didn’t understand all the fine print? Not my fault, so why should I pay for it?
The touchy subject of medicine. Again, why should I pay for your medicine? Yes, we have insurance but we still have to pay a lot out of pocket. Why are YOU entitled to free medicine, but I’m not? How about my kids? Why should I pay for your kids over mine? Last night, President Obama went on and on about programs. I have ONE simple question: Who the hell is going to pay for this? Do these people honestly think money grows on trees?
Words can’t describe how furious I am when I hear all of this. Put on your big girl panties or big boy underwear and pay for your own stuff. It’s called being an adult & self-reliant. Even if I could somehow receive all of this for free I wouldn’t want to because I was taught to be independent and self-reliant. I’m teaching my 3 year old these principles too. She asks me to get her something out of her room and I say no. I tell her to do it herself. She will whine for about 15 minutes, but she eventually does it herself. Don’t tell the labor department this, but I also make her clean up her own toys! Our system isn’t perfect but the answers are not socialism and communism. Those systems will only make everything worse.

Great post! I completely agree. I am currently paying off student loans because I chose to go to a private college whose tuition was insanely high. I never complain, but feel proud that I have a good job and get to send in a check every month (and I am paid up until August 2013 as of today). I don’t understand the mindset of asking someone else to pay for what I want. It won’t mean as much if I don’t invest and pay for it. So why should the money I earn by making my sacrifices go to you so you won’t have to sacrifice? Since when is making a sacrifice a bad thing? It all boils down to how can these guys get more votes. Well, the next time I hear a politician talking about how he/she wants to spend more of my hard-earned dollars to give it to someone else, rather than my child that will be here April 7, I will intentionally vote for the competitor.
Oh yeah…suck it liberals.
Awesome post Mary! When conservative beliefs are articulated like this it makes me so happy to be on the RIGHT side of things.
Hey, an OSU alum! I went to Oklahoma State…. Sorry, but BOOMER SOONER (Grats on the Fiesta Bowl win).
Loved the article. I believe it was Andrew Wilkow who said that in order for you to get something for “free” it has to be given by someone else, thus making the giver a slave to the recipient.
Again, great article! I look forward to seeing more from you in the future
I just had a conversation with a coworker. She said something that I think pertains greatly to this article:
“I don’t mind cleaning my kid’s boogies and dirty diapers. But don’t expect me to clean somebody else’s kid.”
We don’t mind paying for our kid’s college, medicine, car, etc. But why should we have to pay for someone else’s?
TJames, bang on lad. No one appreciates things given as much as those things earned.
Plz buy a good book on Socialism and read it.
